Today: Sunny, with a high near 34. Northwest wind around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.

Tonight: Clear, with a low around 18. Northwest wind around 5 mph.

Sunday: Sunny, with a high near 49. Southwest wind 5 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 15 mph.

There are 3 Warnings in effect:

A Wind Advisory is in effect this morning for north and central Georgia. Sustained winds of 15 to 20 mph are likely.

A Wind Chill Advisory is in effect this morning for portions of north and northwest Georgia. Wind chill values between 5 above to 5 below zero are anticipated.

A Red Flag Warning is in effect for the entire outlook area today. Low relative humidity and high winds will create dangerous fire weather conditions.

A slight chance of snow before noon, then a chance of rain and snow between noon and 3pm, then a chance of snow after 3pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 40. West northwest wind 5 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than one inch possible.

Tonight

A 30 percent chance of snow, mainly before 11pm. Mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly clear, with a low around 12. Wind chill values as low as -1. Blustery, with a north northwest wind 15 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 33 mph. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

Saturday Jan 29

Sunny, with a high near 25. Wind chill values as low as -4. North northwest wind 10 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 34 mph.

North Georgia:

Special Weather Update From the National Weather Service for North Georgia: 

Wintry precipitation is possible tonight across areas of Northeast Georgia. No significant snow accumulations are expected below 2000 feet at this time. A wind advisory is in effect beginning this evening for northeast Georgia, especially across areas of higher elevations. Sustained winds at 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 35 are possible. For the rest of the outlook area, gusty winds up to 25 mph will be possible beginning late tonight.

A wind chill advisory has been issued for areas of North Georgia beginning late tonight and into tomorrow morning. Wind chill values could fall as low as ten below zero across far northern Georgia. While parts of central Georgia including the metro do not meet Wind Chill Advisory criteria, a special Weather Statement for the overnight hours has been issued for wind chill values in the teens.

For Saturday and Sunday: A Fire Weather Watch is in effect for the entire outlook area for Saturday morning into Saturday Evening as minimum relative humidity values fall into the low twenties and mid teens. This combined with northwest winds at 10 to 15 mph and gusts up to 25 mph could result in a Red Flag Warning.

Western North Carolina:

...AREAS OF BLACK ICE CAUSING TREACHEROUS ROAD CONDITIONS THIS MORNING AND TONIGHT...

A winter storm affected much of the region with ice, snow, and sleet yesterday. Roads became wet and slushy as temperatures warmed Sunday afternoon, yet many of those roads have become icy again this morning. Slick driving conditions will persist before temperatures rise above freezing between 10 am and noon. Although some melting is expected this afternoon under abundant sunshine, some secondary or shaded roads may remain treacherous throughout the day. Areas of black ice will develop again tonight and make for hazardous driving conditions for the Tuesday morning commute.

Transportation agencies are advising the public to stay off roads this morning unless necessary. Any motorists that do venture out are urged to use extreme caution. If a road looks wet, it likely is covered in a thin sheet of ice.

North Georgia:

Black ice is possible this morning over north Georgia where cold temperatures have allowed lingering moisture to freeze. A Special Weather Statement is in effect across this area through 9 AM.

Strong winds of 15-25 mph gusting 30-35 mph are likely today across north and central Georgia. A Wind Advisory in effect until 7 PM.  

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Tuesday through Sunday...

There is a chance of some wintry precipitation across the area late Thursday through Friday night. There is great uncertainty this far out in the forecast so please monitor future updates. Otherwise, no other hazardous weather is expected.

"* WHAT...Snow and black ice. Additional snow accumulations of up to one inch. Winds gusting as high as 40 mph. Wet roads will
  refreeze, becoming icy and slippery.

* WHERE...Portions of upstate South Carolina, northeast Georgia  and western North Carolina, near the Blue Ridge Escarpment.

* WHEN...Until 8 AM EST Monday.

* IMPACTS...Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning commute.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Widespread black ice should be expected  Monday morning, and may be a concern into the middle of the
  week. DOT asks persons to stay off roads unless absolutely  necessary."

"North-Northwest winds will pick up this evening and temperatures are expected to fall into the upper 20s across a large portion of North and West Georgia.

Any wet or slushy roads from snow and melted snow will have an opportunity to refreeze overnight tonight as temperatures drop well below freezing resulting in some hazardous driving conditions tonight into early Monday morning ....particularly on elevated surfaces such as bridges and overpasses.

Temperatures are forecast to rise above freezing by late morning Monday with the exception of the northeast GA mountain counties where temperatures are expected to remain below freezing all day Monday. "

Western North Carolina:

Heavy mixed precipitation is underway. Total snow accumulations of 2 to 7 inches are expected across the mountain valleys and extreme northeast Georgia, with 8 to 12  inches along and near the Blue Ridge Escarpment, and 12 to 20  inches at elevations above 4000 feet. Ice accumulations of up to one tenth of an inch are also possible. Winds gusting as high as 45 mph. Authorities are asking you to stay off the roads for several hours.

North Georgia:

Snow, sleet, and freezing rain is underway. Total snow accumulations 1 to 4 inches. Up to 1/4 inch of ice accumulation with locally higher amounts possible. Winds gusting to 35 mph. Stay off the roads if you can. Temperatures are at 32degrees and below.

Weather forecast models are beginning to agree that a significant winter storm will impact the Western North Carolina and North Georgia starting Saturday PM.

Western North Carolina:

From the National Weather Service: “...WINTER STORM WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 6 PM SATURDAY TO 8 AM EST MONDAY...

* WHAT...Heavy mixed precipitation expected. Total snow accumulations of 6 to 10 inches are expected across the mountain valleys and extreme northeast Georgia, with 8 to 12 inches along and near the Blue Ridge Escarpment, and 12 to 20 inches at elevations above 4000 feet. Ice accumulations of up to one tenth of an inch are also possible. Winds gusting as high as 35 mph.

* WHERE...The mountains of the Carolinas and northeast Georgia.

* WHEN...From 6 PM Saturday to 8 AM EST Monday.

* IMPACTS...Travel could be very difficult to impossible. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning commute.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Precipitation may begin as early as Saturday afternoon across parts of the mountains, eventually falling as mostly snow and increasing in coverage and intensity late Saturday night. The precipitation may briefly change to sleet and freezing rain before tapering off Sunday afternoon and evening in most areas, although snow showers are expected to linger along the Tennessee border into Monday morning.

Widespread black ice should be expected Monday morning, and may be a concern into the middle of the week.”

High South Media Network Regional Update:

Wet and cool weather Sunday in The High South will give way to more wintry temperatures with lows in the teens in Western North Carolina and the 20’s in North Georgia starting on Monday.

Special Video:

In 2010 the Sapphire Valley area got 8” of snow each Friday for three straight weeks. It was beautiful and these images never get old!

Western North Carolina:

Ski Sapphire Valley opened their Frozen Falls Tube Park on Saturday and hope to open the ski area over the MLK weekend.

Western North Carolina:

The cold, winter weather was a blessing for ski areas and other winter sports venue as all of them were able to start making snow again!

Sapphire Valley started making snow Monday night but not enough to open the full ski area. 

Ski Sapphire Valley's Frozen Falls Tube Park opened Friday, Jan 7.  View the [Ski Sapphire Snow Report] Target opening date for the Ski Area is MLK weekend.

Ice Skating, Tubing and Skiing is available at several venues, check the Winter Sports link below.

Heads ups for Thursday PM as a chance of rain will turn to a chance of snow with temperatures dropping to about 18 late Thursday into Friday !! A winter storm advisory is in effect.

Artic Blast Arrives...

A High South Media Network Special Report

Arctic blast arrives as predicted!

Just look what a difference a day makes! This first picture is Sunday mid-day at Cataloochee Ski area. The second, Monday mid-day! The artic blast provided the Maggie Valley ski area with both some natural snow and gave them the ability to turn on every snow gun they have!

 

 

 

The town of Boone, North Carolina was a winter wonderland earlier in the day with near white-out conditions, see image below.

 

Even the High South town of Highlands got a good reminder it is still winter, see below:

 

Sapphire Valley and Ski Sapphire Valley got a dusting of snow and while the ski area was unable to start snow making operations, they hope to starting Monday night. The image below is of Ski Sapphire Valley this morning.
